Blood Cleanup – Stubbed In Savannah, GA
As everybody knows our job often involves somebody meeting their end, many times in quite a gruesome fashion.

So when the opportunity arises to restore a home after a survived bloody incident we are more than happy to help. It provides the mind a break from thinking about our own fragile mortality.

Even though we have done full restorations on industrial and commercial sites in the aftermath of workplace accidents most of our calls are still from homeowners and property managers of residential areas. Anything from dog bites, to plumbing failures, even a man who was “attacked” by his own lawnmower, it’s pretty much been seen and cleaned by us.

One story we had we jokingly called “The Pain of Da Feet”. The call came in from Savannah, GA and had us sent out onto spanish moss draped, old world neighborhoods located in this coastal jewel of the south. Large wrought iron gates and low, shellbrick walls bordered the cobblestone streets, defining the boundary of each enormous property.  The houses had been carefully maintained and seemed to have been picked straight from the pages of a history book, if not for the modern luxuries that gave the homes their contemporary appeal as well.  One wasn’t sure whether to expect a horse drawn carriage to make its way down the narrow lane or the sleek carriage of a Porsche.

Once we arrived at our destination I was slightly disappointed to see that we would not be given an opportunity to look inside these memorials of bygone times, the meticulously restored homes of high society Savannah pre-Civil War. Instead our job took us to a newer, more modern addition to this home. It was a little guest house a man had built for his mother. It was about the size of a detached garage but beautifully decorated.

An agent for the family met us just outside the structure, still beautiful by anyone’s standards, and led us around the back of the garage, through a lush garden complete with a Koi pond, to a private entrance for the small apartment. The young man explained that the owner of this home had built the detached residence as a compromise for his mother. She was getting older but wanted her independence and he was concerned about something happening to her and wanted her closer. He spared no expense in building this new home for his mother and even created a beautiful garden almost identical to the one his father built for her after their wedding.

We were taken through the door into the kitchen where the accident had occurred. It seem the elderly mother was walking through the kitchen and lost her footing and slipped. When she fell she heard a sickening sound as her foot got jammed underneath the refrigerator. She felt immediate pain so she knew something was up but was horrified at the extent of the damage when she removed her foot. The force of the impact had slammed her big toe against a sharpened corner and all but severed it from her foot.

Naturally, she panicked some and stumbled around the apartment. The increased heart rate along with no immediate care of the injury had left a trail of bloody footprints all the way to the bedroom where she had made it to call for help.

The blood trail made it easy to see exactly where she had gone. It was almost like she marked where each room needed to be cleaned all the way to the site of the accident. Even though the amount of blood cleanup was minimal compared to what we usually do, the cleanup took a couple of days. A little sanitizing, a little carpet cleaning to go along with our process for the blood clean up and the residence was back to looking in pristine condition.

Unfortunately, the vascular damage to the woman’s toe was too great for it to be saved but considering how most of the people who call us end up, she was very lucky. A rubber strip was added underneath the fridge to prevent this kind of thing from happening again.
