Can you imagine going away on vacation and saying goodbye to your beloved cat until you return, only when you get back home you discover that someone or something has broken into your home and brutally murdered your furry family member?

It’s happened.

I see some crazy stuff working this job as you all know, but among the strangest cleanups I’d ever performed involved a grizzly homicide… of a housecat.

The call came in on the Monday after Memorial Day weekend.  The woman on the phone was beside herself as she explained what had occurred to prompt a need for our services.

I’ll never forget what she told me…

She and the rest of her family of four had gotten a small persian kitten three years prior as a Christmas present from the father.  They grew to love the animal and deciding to pamper the feline, they had purchased a large “cat tree” for a screened in back porch connected to their home.

Mr. Bojangles, as the cat was dubbed, enjoyed lounging in the sun on the porch, and it was there one day that our client had had a very odd, troubling experience with her neighbor.  Apparently, after hearing a strange sound coming from the direction of the back patio, she had gone to investigate and had found her teenaged neighbor spraying Mr. Bojangles with a high pressured water hose from his own back yard.  Angry, she had stormed next door to confront the young man, who dismissed her on the spot before going back into his home.

Thinking that he was just some kid with a chip on his shoulder, she let the matter drop. A few weeks later the family left for their annual vacation, never thinking that the disturbed boy from next door had made plans of his own with their cat.

When the coast was clear, the boy broke in through a back door and then began torturnng the poor creature, beating it senselessly as it struggled to get away, until the poor animal died of the injuries he had sustained and bled out onto the floor in the bathroom.

It was only after the boy’s fingerprints had been found inside the home that the truth came to light. Needless to say, the family, especially the kids, were pretty shaken up about the whole thing.  The mother needed us to quickly remove all evidence of any traumatic incident involving the cat from the home so that the children could move forward and begin to recover themselves.

Inside the home, the mess was everywhere.  The cat had really gone through some hell before its death, and I had to really stop to wonder about the young man who had committed such a horrendous act.

Cats can carry many types of diseases which can be dangerous to human health as well, so it was vitally important that we thoroughly sanitize the home to protect future inhabitants.

The bathroom was where the animal had been strangled to death and then left to drip blood from its wounds onto the ground below.  Luckily we are very skilled at blood removal, and in a matter of hours we had returned the house to a totally restored state.

Last we heard, the young attacker had been committed by a judge to a psychiatric hospital for mental evaluation.  And the children have a new friend named Roger… a large German Shephard puppy.
