In the Aftermath of a Fairly Traumatic Event

A violent crime and the police response to it – you need a qualified crime scene clean-up company. We understand that you need a helping hand to clean-up the mess a crime has left in its wake and that’s why we’re here.

Sometimes this job pulls back the curtain on the darker side of the human condition. Seeing how cruel and heartless we can be towards each other, particularly over the most trivial things, is difficult to come to terms with. Life should be valued, but often it isn’t.

When the killer turns out to be someone that the victim trusted as a friend or family member, the situation takes on an even more sinister twist which can feel like a betrayal of the worst sort. At the beginning of the year, I received one such case.

The caller was the wife of a man who had owned a business which specialized in buying and fixing up houses for resale… a process known through pop culture as ‘flipping’. She explained that she needed our services after the death of her husband in one of the houses they had been in the middle of renovating. You could tell she was having a hard time as she answered my unasked question… he had been a victim of homicide. And there was a lot of blood.

The home was located in an older neighborhood outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and most of the area was in the process of being what we call gentrified, or being bought up cheaply by investors who then restore and rebuild the properties to their former glory.

Pulling up, I could see that the house was under re-construction as well. The yard was scattered with all types of building debris, and various tools of the trade sat leaving against the side of the home. We were led inside by the caller, a small woman in her mid 40s who was now left behind to try to pick up the pieces of her life. She took us into the living room where there in the center of the room a large pool of blood gave indication that something terrible had occurred.

We Got Straight to Work on the Scene

There was no furniture to speak of except for an old couch which sat tipped on its side, so the job was relatively straightforward. I could tell that the wife really needed someone to unload her burden on, so when I got a moment I took her aside and gently asked if she wanted to tell me what had happened. With a deep breath, she began to tell me that her husband was a good man, who always saw the best in people. He had recently met a man down on his luck outside of a gas station and trying to help light, had hired him as a laborer to do odd jobs around the house they were currently renovating. But no good deed goes unpunished it seems and John Doe put his trust in the wrong man.

Late one evening, after everyone else had gone, John had been confronted by the man who was not satisfied with the amount of cash he’d been given for his work that day. He picked up a hammer and bludgeoned John D. to death right there in front of the fire place. It was a tragic story of loss… The killer took a father and husband away forever over what amounted to nothing more than folding money. Although I couldn’t bring her husband back, I take pride and comfort in knowing that I am erasing any evidence of the horror in the physical sense and easing the process of moving forward with a fresh beginning.

In the end, the killer was picked up a few blocks from the scene of the crime, still covered in his victim’s blood. There was certainly a lot of it. So his day will come. In the meantime, we were able to completely restore her property for resale… and maybe we restored some peace of mind too.
