On occasion we are contacted to do a cleanup that doesn’t involve some terrible tragedy. Sometimes we are called to restore a location after a natural event which takes place in an unnatural setting. Of course I’m referring to the messy process of an unexpected arrival.
And I do mean unexpected.
The call came in on a Monday, as they often do, to our Baltimore, Maryland office. The caller identified himself as the father of a young woman who had just welcomed her first child into the world… in the bathroom of her one bedroom apartment.
As we drove out towards the neighborhood, which was in an area known for its college students and youth culture, the mood was buoyant… sure we were heading to a job that would require careful removal of blood and other bodily fluids, but this incident had ended happily with a life created instead of a life destroyed.
We met the caller, as usual, in front of the address listed on the work order. It was a small apartment building just a few blocks from the local University. As we were led inside the elevator I turned to the older man to offer my congratulations on the birth of his grandchild. He smiled kindly and replied quietly that he was still getting used to the idea of being a grandpa now.
His daughter had not known, as wild as it sounds, that she had conceived a child during a passionate evening the summer after her sophomore year at school. Apparently she didn’t recognize the signs of pregnancy and according to her father, had not stopped her cycles nor had she gained any weight. Two days prior to being called, the father explained, his daughter had complained about unusual lower back pain so she had gone home to rest.
A Few Hours Later He Got News That He Never Expected…
His daughter had gone into labor and convinced she was dying, had called 911 who arrived to find her grasping the sink in her bathroom, standing in a pool of blood and amniotic fluid. Her son was born on the ride to the hospital.
Looking at the mess in the bathroom, it was clear something big had taken place. Bodily fluids covered the tile on the floor, and dripped down the toilet and baseboard. The cleanup, however, was fairly straightforward and after just a couple of hours, we had completely erased any evidence of mother nature’s handiwork.
Last I heard, mother and child were doing very well and had moved back to live with her parents.
