Sometimes, even I am left speechless at a scene, despite the many years I have been in this business. Not necessarily because of the gore, though there have been more than a few cases that could only be described as a nightmare due to the unreal amount of blood or decomposing human waste present at the sight, and not always because of the gruesome nature of the crime itself either.
No, on occasion it’s the behavior of people we encounter at the call that can rob me of my rapier wit. Need an example?
Ok, take for instance a call we took at our Atlanta office, that had come from a commercial business involving the removal of a large amount of blood in the aftermath of an assault that had occurred in the store.
As usual, we responded immediately, packed up our truck and headed over to the large chain grocery store that was located in a working class neighborhood just outside of Roswell, GA.
Half a dozen police cars lined the curb at the front of the business, their drivers gathered in a semi circle beside the sliding automatic doors that led into the store as customers filed out with carts laden with food stuff. As one middle aged man approached the entrance he was stopped by an officer and told that the store was closed due to an incident.
Curious, I made my way over towards the same door to get a look inside, but as I did so, a loud shout stopped me in my tracks. It was the cop from just moments before, who repeated that the store was closed.
After a brief introduction to clear up any confusion, he apologized then explained that a young man had been stabbed by an angry boyfriend who thought the victim was acting inappropriately towards the man’s fiancee.
As we talked, he led us inside and down an aisle towards the back of the store and then into the restroom, where blood had been splattered on the wall and collected on the hard floor. Pretty routine stuff, sadly.
Human beings are each other’s own worst enemies it seems sometimes. However, as I began to get started, I was amazed to see customers still pushing carts precariously close to and even THROUGH the bright red puddle. In fact, one older woman could clearly see the terrible mess, and she just continued to WALK straight into it!
So besides the trauma scene, now we also were cleaning up bloody shoe prints and bloody wheel marks that led away from the grisly task ahead. Now I could understand why the police officer had been so forceful in his attempt to prevent anyone else from entering the store and causing more issues.

All in all, the job was not a difficult one to complete due to the fact that the flooring in these locations are meant to keep out fluids from the sub flooring below. After we removed all traces of the sticky, crimson bio waste, using only first rate, hospital grade cleaners, we did a follow up with a special light that illuminates biological matter, namely blood and semen. Finally we used our Halo fogger to sanitize and decontaminate the surfaces within the scene.
The hardest part of the job, for me, was dealing with the disappointment in humanity. How far have we fallen as a society when pools of blood don’t even illicit the barest notice, or at least the desire to avoid walking through it?
