Recently we were contacted at our Atlanta office about a home that had been involved in a drug deal gone wrong. The house was located in a low income neighborhood that was starting to experience gentrification, or the revitalization of communities by wealthy real estate developers/investors, and had undergone a tidy makeover of its own only a short while ago.
As you can imagine, the homeowner was a little on the panicked side after having been woken up by Atlanta PD, informing them that their tenant had been shot and killed in a violent home invasion robbery over involving some prescription pills and cash.
Once we were standing in the hallway of the small, yet charming home, admiring the pleasant shade of beige the owner had chosen to use throughout the property as we discussed ways to remove the blood splatter that covered a large portion of the wall.
The neutral tone of the carpet remnant that had been used down the length of the hallway, into the family room, was starkly contrasted by the pool of crimson that formed little dales and valleys across the tile on the bathroom floor.
Upon deeper inspection, bullet holes began to stand out as well in the drywall, and tape marks from the police photographers had removed some of that beautiful shade of paint.
It was clear, who ever the victim had been, they must have been worth more dead than alive. Such as shame.
We got started immediately, pulling up that lovely carpet that was unfortunately ruined, and cleaning deep down all the way to the sub flooring.
Baseboards beneath the carpet line and tile line were paid special attention to and we used a uniquely designed light to illuminate any areas of blood that we may have missed initially, so that we could be 100% thorough.
Next we tackled the blood in the bathroom, and after we decided that it had seeped down beneath the tile, through the grout, it had to go. We had to break it all up with purposely built machine, then shovel it all into the trash before we were able to correctly sanitize the bathroom.
The walls were the easiest remediate, and required little more than some extensive cleaning with hospital grade chemicals to restore its luster. A quick coat of paint, and it looked good as new.
Finally, after the entire area had been totally cleaned and decontaminated, new flooring for the bathroom and hallway were brought in and installed.
In the end, the home was once again a silent witness to the tragedy that had taken place inside its walls. The homeowner, a middle aged black man, happily took his keys back and exclaimed at how great the home looked this time. Sputtering, I replied, this time sir? confused. He turned to me and told me that his homeowner’s insurance had just begun covering crime scene remediation, otherwise he would have used our services for the other two murders that had occurred at separate times in the. very. same. home. I was speechless. As I left, I felt the press of some spirits not at peace in the home. Somethings, even we can’t clean away. Creepy.
