The day started off with a meeting between the cleanup techs and the foreman at the scene of a suicide.

The 14 year old girl’s body was found when her parents returned home from a shopping trip to downtown Atlanta. She had told them she wanted to stay home and catch up on her homework apparently from what I overheard them say. The parents were in shock at what they found.

It was apparent that she had used a knife from the kitchen of the suburban home to stab herself repeatedly. The leather sofa had blood stains, the carpet, the walls. I have to wonder how she stood to do this to herself. What could possibly be so wrong in her life to make her think this was the answer.

As long as I do this job I can still not bring peace to a situation like this.

I know the parents will be hurting for a long time to come. Regardless of my training in sensitivity and empathy there is nothing I can say to this mom and dad that will bring their little girl back.

I am limited in what I can do to help but I AM making a difference just being here and dealing with this cleanup. A parent or family member should NEVER attempt to cleanup a bloody suicide cleanup on their own. This is entirely too painful for the family to do and the blood and bodily fluids have to be dealt with properly.

There are high standards and guidelines for proper disposal and treatment of bodily fluids and blood. ABT techs follow the protocol and comply to the standards set by both the EPA and OSHA plus we have our own company policies.

I was instructed to begin the floor cleanup and removal process. The spatters were everywhere and some areas are entirely blood soaked.

Blood cleanup must be done by professionally trained blood cleanup personnel in order to protect current and future inhabitants of a property as well as to ensure the safety of those cleaning blood scenes.

Blood cleanup involves the removal and cleaning or disposal of items that have been contaminated with body fluids, blood, or tissue matter, but does not stop there. Those trained in blood cleaning are adept at tracking down and remediating areas that have been contaminated – areas that the untrained eye would not see.
