Some of our more… interesting… calls always seem to involve matters of the heart, or more specifically, love gone wrong.
Take for example, the recent call that we took from an apartment building manager, who was calling for our blood removal services in the aftermath of a terrible incident which had occurred within the downtown Baltimore rental community.
Since our offices were right around the corner from the scene, it took no time at all hanging to the residence. Yellow crime scene tape criss crossed the front door of the home, indicating that something awful had taken place inside. As we geared up to head into the apartment, the middle aged man who had apparently been our caller, showed up with a smile and a handshake, a set of keys jingling in his hands.
As he unlocked the door that would lead us into the scene if this nightmare, he eagerly recounted the events, as he knew them, that has gone down.
It started out as a normal night where Jane Doe and her boyfriend went out to a local Baltimore bar they had often frequented. They enjoyed a couple bottles of wine, and tossed back a few shots of tequila, but the evening soured after another man approached the young woman at the bar and offered to buy her a drink, angering her boyfriend, a respected professor and researcher at the University of Maryland.
The two argued and left the bar in a huff. After the couple left Bodegas they had continued to argue and when they arrived at the woman’s apartment around 2 a.m. Sunday, the fight escalated. The woman would later say to police that the professor had grabbed her, so she pulled his hair so hard that some of it remained in her hand. But she told police that didn’t faze him, so she grabbed her shoe and started beating him over the head.
Neighbors told police they heard shouting. It sounded, they said, like furniture being moved, the apartment manager told us. At 3:44 a.m. Sunday, about two hours after the couple arrived at the apartment, police arrived at the scene. Who called them remains unclear.
When the door to the residence opened, it was an unbelievable sight. There was blood everywhere, on the floor, on walls and on the ceiling. Just before the man turned to leave us to our work, he concluded his story by telling us that when the police finally arrived, they found Jane Doe standing over the body of her deceased boyfriend, covered in blood.

The cleanup was very straightforward, though I had to wonder what had turned this woman, whose pictures were still scattered around the home, into a raging lunatic. Using special equipment, we began methodically removing all contaminated material, carefully wrapping it and then placing it in specially marked bins.
Then, we removed the carpet, so that we could sanitize and clean the blood from the sub flooring where it has pooled in great qualities. Once that was checked and double checked, we replaced new carpet throughout the residence, then carefully removed any last droplets of blood from the ceilings and walls.
