Baltimore Homicide Rate hits over 200 in 2013

November 7, 24 year old Katira Drummond was shot on a Baltimore sidewalk and later died making her the 200th homicide victim this year. Drummond was the fourth homicide victim in the Franklin Square neighborhood. Less than a mile away the same day a young black man was shot several times and killed, just four days short of his 22nd birthday.

The homicide rate in Baltimore is now 7.4 percent higher than last year.

Most of the victims have been black males under the age of 30, many of which were committed by organized criminal gangs. For fear of retaliation and fear of their lives witnesses are reluctant and afraid to “snitch” or be involved which is making homicidal detectives and law enforcement officials task that much more difficult.

November 7 was also the day that “potentially one of Baltimore law enforcement’s biggest gang busts ever” took down 48 Black Guerilla Family (BGF) prison gang members, charged with drug dealing and 10 related murders in an 8 year span. Another 20 members were taken in just a few days later.

Reports Indicated a Huge Correlation of Events

These reports tied BGF members and correction officers, a healthcare worker, DEO informants and prison officials to the gang related crimes. The list of crimes include homicides, drug trafficking, kidnapping for ransom children of drug dealers and more.

The BGF was established in the early 1960’s. Members and associates held regular meetings in Mund Park. In an effort to announce efforts to take back the park from the BGF, a joint news conference between the police commissioner’s office and state of Baltimore chose Mund Park to announce the BGF raid. This is symbolic in more ways as this area has been a high crime area including race riots for many years.

To date, at least seven jail officers have plead guilty to smuggling drugs and contraband, cell phones, etc., and at least one admitted to have sexual relations with at least two prison gang members.
