In terms of accident cleanup or trauma site remediation, the involvement of a professional cleaning service is crucial. Whether it is a traffic accident, an accidental death, or an industrial accident, the situation will normally involve biohazards that require expert attention.
Additionally, the accident scene needs to be cleaned and restored to its original condition as quickly as possible to ease the minds of everyone involved. Though often we are called out to homes or industrial properties, we also handle crime or accident scene remediation that takes place in automobiles. Some of the hardest jobs, in terms of minute detail cleanup, involves restoring a vehicle to like-new condition after something terrible had happened.
Many times, automobiles are used in the commission of a crime that ends up going horribly wrong. We have seen everything from cars that were used to transport narcotics to cars that were the scene of mass murder and even, murder suicide.
Take for instance the case we were called to handle very recently which involved a young couple just outside of Baltimore, Maryland.
As we would come to learn, there had been some reports of domestic violence between the two star crossed lovers, who had married only a short time before the tragic event would take place. Unfortunately, these types of abusive relationships often end very badly, and this one would prove to be especially so. At about 1am a call came into emergency services, but before the dispatcher could get more than a brief second to speak, the line went dead.
When return calls were not answered, a police officer was sent out to the location to investigate. What he found was heartbreaking.
The couple had not only married in the last few months, but they had also become new parents. Friends and family would later say that tension inside the home was amplified ten fold after the arrival of the baby. No one, however, ever thought that the husband would be capable of doing what he did. There’s no way to know what exactly occurred, but the first officer to the scene found a nightmare.
Pulling up to the residence, he saw the family car running, with headlight beams cutting through the incessant rain, illuminating the inside of a darkened garage. When he approached the vehicle, he discovered the bodies of the man and woman, slumped in their seats, dead from gunshot wounds to the head.
Looking at the car, it was as if I was looking at a movie prop. Blood and brain matter was everywhere, it clung to the leather seats, door panels, dashboard and cloth ceiling. The bodily fluids from the deceased had soaked into the leather, and the smell after sitting in the sun, was indescribable.
In situations like this, it underscores how important it is to hire trained professionals like those at ABT. No family member should have to go through the trauma of losing a loved one, and then be subjected to the trauma of trying to clean the area on their own. Blood, urine, feces and other bodily fluids can contain dangerous pathogens which pose significant risk to your health. Not only do we have the proper equipment and training, but we are also EPA and OSHA certified. We will work with insurance to ensure the proper procedures are taken to restore not only your property, but your life.
Ever seen Pulp Fiction? Mr. Wolf? Ya, it was just like that. We had to begin by removing the seats and panels, and then start picking up the biggest pieces of flesh with our hands.
Then, we moved on to the smaller bits, using specialized equipment and hospital grade cleaners to sanitized and decontaminate the interior.
As I erased any trace of the tragedy that ended this couple’s life, I couldn’t help but wonder who would take care of the little one now that his father had robbed his mother of her life… police had determined that at some point during that evening, the man had begun beating his wife with a baseball bat, and had evidently struck the child as well.
Realizing that the situation was dire, the courageous mother had wrapped the injured baby in a bundle of towels and placed it inside a laundry basket to hide the baby from the murderous father. Then, despite her own fear and severe injuries, she made a break for the family car, stashing the child out of sight in the back seat. But her husband was ready for her, and he directly jumped in the car, shot her in the face, then turned the gun on himself.
Imagine the responding officers surprise, when in the midst of such a hellish scene, hearing a baby’s cry coming from the basket on the back seat. The love of a mother was so great that she gathered her courage and risked everything to escape her abuser and save her child. In the end, she had accomplished both.
