Unprovoked Wildlife Attack

It was late in the morning and Jean was trying to get her children to go outside and play. She wanted to clean up the house and get some chores done and it was beautiful outside. Her home is situated on a beautiful lot that backs up to vast natural preserve, wooded and swampy. Sometimes, her children romp through the forest trails, wearing thick rubber boots to protect them from snakes. Florida is home to over 50 species of snakes and several are venomous and common to Central Florida. Because the weather was warming up so much and many snakes were coming out of hibernation, Jean decided to send the kids out on their bikes that morning.  This was a lifesaving choice for Jean’s children that Jean wouldn’t realize until days to come, but it had nothing to do with the reptiles she was attempting to avoid.

She opened the garage and pulled out the children’s bikes so they could ride around the neighborhood and get some fresh, warm, April morning air. As the three rode off, Jean saw an incredible sight; three black bears were rummaging through a pile of garbage on the side of the house just across the street. It looked as though they’d overturned a couple of trash cans. She’d seen a bear in her neighborhood once before and several times deep in the preserve, but this gathering of bears was an unexpected treat, so she thought. Jean squinted as she watched in amazement. It wasn’t until two more bears turned the corner from behind her house, apparently walking over to join in the garbage-fest across the street, that Jean realized she was in trouble. The two bears didn’t continue across the street when they spotted Jean in her driveway; instead, they attacked.

A neighbor witnessed the initial attack and recalled the largest bear biting Jean’s head, mauling her, and dragging her into her open garage. That’s when the neighbor dialed 911 in shock.

My first instinct was to run to help her, but it was almost immediately apparent that this angry animal would attack me, or anyone else, if threatened. I fumbled with my cell phone, trying to pull it from my pocket and then dropped it as I was trying desperately to dial for help. I jumped into my car in my driveway and started honking my horn and then backed up and pulled into Jean’s driveway, laying on my horn. That’s when the bear ran out of the garage, dragging Jean by the head.

An Amazing Escape

The bear dragged Jean to the edge of the woods, but miraculously she was able to escape as the bear ran into the woods and disappeared. Rescue arrived minutes later; Jean had managed to drag herself back to her garage and lay on the floor waiting for help. She’d suffered tremendous blood loss and had gaping wounds on her head, legs, and torso. She would later receive 47 staples to her head and many stitches to her lower body.

Jean’s neighbor, Ana, and Ana’s husband were able to shield the children from the gory mess left behind in the garage before their father arrived home. And Ana’s husband intended on cleaning up Jean’s garage until it became apparent that there very easily could be dangers involved and he certainly didn’t want to miss anything and accidentally leave behind any biohazards that may create a dangerous situation down the road. The couple thoughtfully researched and then called out a team of our technicians at Advanced Bio Treatment to take on the details of the cleanup, decontamination, and removal of the biohazard material.

Who Helps With the Mess?

Advanced Bio Treatment has an excellent reputation and years of experience in dealing with trauma and accident cleanup, in addition to all the required certifications to handle and dispose of biohazard waste. Anytime blood or body fluid is part of a cleanup, it is essential that precautions are taken to ensure that all biological materials, even microscopic amounts, are removed and that the area is decontaminated. Not only blood, but many body fluids and tissues, can harbor dangerous bacteria and pathogens that are transmissible to other humans. There are even some dangers that linger in dried blood for months, even years. Our technicians are some of the most highly trained, not to mention they continue their education in the proper methods of removing and decontaminating biohazard material.
