Just About Any Task Can Take a Dangerous Turn and Become a Traumatic Injury

Older people, in particular the frail elderly, are one of the groups of our population most vulnerable to accidents, particularly in and around the home. Those over 65 years of age are most often at risk, suffering both the highest mortality rate and the most severe injuries.
In fact, it’s estimated 500,000 people aged over 65 years of age attend accident and emergency departments as the result of a home accident every year. Many of these accidents involve the bathroom or kitchen and falls account for a significant number of the personal injury calls I receive at ABT.
Take for instance the case I took on which involved a elderly man in his 80s. I was contacted by his son, who told me that there had been an accident at his father’s apartment, and we were needed to remove the blood before his father returned home from the hospital, ironically right around Father’s Day.
We drove to an older neighborhood in a charming suburb outside of Baltimore, and there in front of 55-and-over community apartment building we met up with our client.
He was a middle aged man, with a young child in tow, which surprised me. Seeing the momentary shock on my face, the man smiled and introduced his son before giving him permission to go out to a tire swing which hung from a large oak tree in from of the building.
‘I’m on my way to drop him off at school‘, he said with a shrug and a smile.
Then be handed me the keys to the residence and briefly explained what had transpired inside. His father had been a Navy man, he started off, and after his wife had passed a couple of years ago, he had refused to give up living independently on his own.
But that stubborn streak nearly cost him dearly, as he had tripped over a rug on the floor in his kitchen late one night and had struck his head against the counter. The fall opened up a serious gash in his scalp and broke his nose, bleeding furiously all over the home as he first tried to stem the blood loss himself before finally realising the need for outside medical intervention and picking up the phone.
After he left to take his child to class, we got a look in the home. Blood started in the kitchen, with big bright drops of blood telling the story… partially. Then the blood led to the bathroom where it was apparent that the older man had been in a panic after seeming the injuries in the mirror. A cordless phone sat on the sink, also covered in blood from his attempt to call for help.
Next, he had gone to his bedroom to try a different phone and a trail of blood followed, making a path around a desk and chair.
The cleanup was relatively straight forward, the only caveat being that a fair number of smaller items had to be thoroughly cleaned of bloody finger prints and blood splatter that it became a very meticulous undertaking. Slowly but surely, we removed all signs of the trauma which had occurred just in time to hand the keys back to the client as he was on his way to bring his father home from the hospital. It was a job I was very proud of, because it takes a labor of love to really do this job right, and because I felt good that I could help this family concentrate on more important matters, like, appreciating the time they still had together.
