Two years ago, a team of our technicians was called out to a small farmhouse on the outskirts of Owensboro, Kentucky. The scene was a brutal one in which a child had been fatally injured by a riding lawn mower. It was a friend of the family that called and requested our services, knowing that the family would be incapable of handling the ordeal of recovering the machinery of the riding lawn mower and the part of their property where the accident occurred.
A Novel Tractor Ride Ends In Unimaginable Loss
A grandfather had done as many other grandfathers and placed his two-year-old granddaughter, Gracie, on his lap for a ride around the yard on their lawn mower. He’d done it a handful of times before, once before with little Gracie, and several times with his 5-year-old grandson. It was more than he could resist when Gracie woke up from her nap and ran out to him as he was just beginning to mow the yard, a friend of the family shared,
I saw them riding along from my property about five or six hundred feet or so away. I heard it when it happened, like a bunch of clanking, followed by silence, and then the blood curdling screams of the family running to and from the mower. I never saw nothing than that. One of my neighbors met me halfway as I ran to see if I could help, screaming to call 911.
The child had fallen from her grandfather’s lap and became entangled in the mower blade. Her body had already been removed by the coroner, but there were small sections of her entrails, chunks of flesh, and hair scattered over a 5 foot radius of the riding mower and entangled in the blade of the mower. Blood was splattered and smeared over the entire machine had saturated the ground, even to the point of pudding in several areas on the patchy ground. The technicians worked compassionately to contain her remains and to remove all evidence of body fluid and human remains at the scene. The team even went to the extent of disassembling portions of the mower in order to completely and thoroughly return the area and equipment to their pre-trauma conditions.
