I was just telling someone the other day that nothing shocks me anymore. After working for two years with ABT I think I have seen it all. I found out though almost as soon as I said that I had seen it all and nothing shocks me, I saw more and I was shocked!
Hoarders are a rare breed. Everyone seems to know this about them, they are known for thinking differently from others, seeing value in junk that no one else would have in their home. Collecting “treasures” from every junk store and thrift shop around.
I would think the filth and the smell would be enough to discourage them but that doesn’t work either. They go on and on for years sometimes and family members and friends are frustrated trying to change them.
When we do a cleanup job at the home of a hoarder we know we will be there for many hours. Sometimes we carry out boxes and boxes of junk and bags of garbage to fill a dumpster or two. We never know what to expect. While hoarders are a lot like each other they have their own unique ideas about what they like to collect.
This lady was very obnoxious to deal with. Her family had arranged for us to come clean up her house and she insisted on being there. This meant she would be watching everything we did. She would say something if she didn’t want us to move or touch something and believe me she didn’t want us to touch much of anything.
The worst part of the job was one of her back rooms which was filthy. This lady had 27 cats that we counted and at least 15 of them were dead. One looked like a stuffed animal. She had let the cats roam the house and this room had a pile of cat feces that was knee deep. It was one of the most horrible sights I had seen. That mixed with the dead cats made me nauseous.
She was so callous about the whole dead cat scenario, she made the comment that she couldn’t bend over to clean them up and if that makes her a nasty housekeeper so be it!
I just couldn’t get over her nasty house and nasty attitude. Unfreakinbelievable~!!
I am now afraid to say that I have seen it all.
