In Gainesville we received a call about a meth lab that had been discovered in a motel.
A fellow occupant noticed a very strong chemical smell and complained to the management. When no one answered the door the police were contacted because of suspicious activity. Police eventually uncovered what was a meth lab right in a motel room with using the bathroom exhaust fan to ventilate the room.
Meth lab contaminants pose an extremely serious health risk if not disposed and cleaned up properly. The number of meth labs law enforcement seizes each year in increasing drastically.
When we arrived on the scene we met with the owner of the motel. He explained to us that this had never happened at his motel before and he was upset and wanted it cleaned up immediately. The occupants in the room who were cooking meth had been staying there on a weekly basis and he never once suspected that type of activity before.
When we made our way into the room it was destroyed.
Chemicals used to create meth consist of paint solvents, paint thinners and acids. These are extremely dangerous to have to breathe in which is why we wear protective gear and masks to protect ourselves. There were propane tanks in the corner of the room and the sink was stained pink from the chemicals.
It smelled horrible and we had to let the room air out for a little bit before we kept working. The chemical odor was very strong since the room itself was just a little over three hundred square feet.
The sinks, mirrors, and surfaces in the motel room were covered in chemical debris. We had to be careful cleaning up such a mess. The couches and beds can absorb these chemicals too which can cause health related issues later on down the road.
We completely cleaned out the motel room and ventilation system and left no trace that there was ever a meth lab in that motel room. We disposed of all the bedding and clothing left behind in the room since fabrics can absorb the chemical aftermath from a meth lab. The owner let us dispose of the couch and chairs that were present in the room also. We wanted to remove any potential risks from the room.
