Not every call we get here at ABT involves death or dismemberment…

On the contrary.

Many times the client is looking for someone to come in and restore a house in the aftermath of a angry renter or in the case of our next story, squatters who have taken advantage of a property sitting unused.

We were working near Knoxville, TN when we were contacted by a homeowner who had a vacation property out at a very popular lake retreat.

The drive was very pleasant, and we passed through some very beautiful countryside before we arrived in a small, trailer home community that had been built right next to a large lake in the southern part of the state.

The caller met us out by the edge of the road, and briefing gave us a rundown on what to expect.

Apparently this particular summer home was only used a few weeks out of the year, and the rest of the time it sits vacant waiting for the next season. This trip to the lake went a little off course when they opened the door to their vacation home and found that they had been hosting a whole pack of… squatters. The worst kind.

The home was destroyed. Furniture sat tipped over, some broken into pieces to fuel a small fire in the back of the home. Countless boxes of empty cigarette cartons scattered over the floor, mingling with all types of gross things like condoms and drug paraphernalia. My momentary relief at realizing that these people had at least practiced safe sex was quickly swept away by the growing suspicion that they had been using the front living room as a toilet. The floor had been soaked with some kind of putrid smelling fluid, and the whole home reeked.

They’d really done a number. But no job is too tough for our pros. By the end of the second day, we had completely replaced the flooring, sanitized the whole trailer and thoroughly removed any trace of the gypsies that had used this home, for what appeared to be the entirety of the winter months.
