Unattended Death Cleanup

One thing I have learned after doing this job for the past year and a half is that death is inevitable, how you die, where you die and when you die are questions we don’t know the answers to until the time we die. And I don’t care what anyone tells you, you don’t ever really get used to seeing a decomposing body. Its something we all are uncomfortable with when we see it. I suppose that might be because none of us really want to see ourselves in that way and we know that there for the grace of God go I.

However, one fact is certain, our bodies are flesh and blood and when they decompose its not a pretty sight.

A body that has begin to decompose does some strangely disturbing things, as the clock ticks away the minutes your body turns deathly pale, heavy red blood cells move to the parts of your body nearest the ground because circulation has stopped. There are purple splotches over your lower parts which is called livor mortis. A coroner can determine the time you died by studying livor mortis.

Just a little note here a scientific definition of Livor mortis– the reddish-blue discoloration of the cadaver that occurs in the dependent portions of the body due to gradual gravitational flow of unclotted blood.

Experienced investigators, pathologists, coroners and the like can tell by examining the livor mortis if a body has been tampered with. Its amazing how this stuff works.

Crime scene cleanup techs like myself are not in this category of investigators, pathologists, or coroners.

We see it enough that we begin to pick up on the terms and see the actual process so we may not have the book smarts but we get it.
