Some Trauma Cleanup’s are Worth all the Mess

At Advanced Bio Treatment, we encounter some incredible situations often with outlandish stories.  The sheer nature of our business lends itself very often to tragedy, but occasionally we get the opportunity to be part of someone’s greatest moment or a close call that ends in relief and thanks.  Last May, we were part of an amazing story where we were called to cleanup bodily fluids, that was shared with us in part by the airline that called on us for our services and also by the first responders who assisted a young family in trouble.

Hannah and Vincent were making one last trip to visit Hannah’s grandmother, Mamma Margo, as Hannah calls her.  Mamma Margo, ninety-one at the time, was in the hospital with advanced cancer and she was ready to say her goodbyes.  Hannah and Vincent recall how sad they felt when they got the news and how tragic it was that Mamma Margo would never meet her first great-grandchild, whom Hannah was almost eight months pregnant with as they boarded their flight to San Francisco, California from Columbus, Ohio.  Hannah and Vincent knew they were cutting it close by traveling later in their pregnancy, but because the flight was under 5 hours and due to the nature of the circumstances, Hannah was permitted by her obstetrician to make the flight.

We were about halfway into the flight, when I knew something was wrong.  Being my first baby, I wasn’t sure what to expect or what was normal, and I certainly didn’t want to create any kind of false alarm and make the plane land in the middle of nowhere and end up suffering from gas pains.

Hannah waited too long, unfortunately, to tell anyone she might be in labor.  She suffered through what she thought to be indigestion until she could stand it no longer and asked her husband to get help.

There isn’t exactly a good place to give birth on a plane, it turns out.  I literally laid on the floor in the back of the plane and screamed for what felt like an hour.  Vincent and I were terrified that this was all happening too early for our little baby girl, but miraculously she was fine.

An emergency room nurse was on board and assisted Hannah in the birth of her little miracle.  When the plane landed in San Francisco, Hannah, Vincent, and baby were transported immediately to the hospital which was amazingly the same hospital where Hannah’s grandmother Margo awaited her.  Hannah and Vincent say that it was all meant to happen just so Mamma Margo could meet her first great-grandchild, born in midair, little Margaret Grace.

Biohazard Cleanup: A Job Best Left to Professionals

Needless to say, after Hannah and family and the rest of the flight exited the plane, there was a great deal of cleanup, biohazard waste removal, and decontamination to be done.  An aircraft crew has some material to deal with various situations while in flight, but accommodating a birth and containing the fluids and blood from such an event is pretty much impossible.  Time, of course was a concern for the airline as passengers were lined up awaiting the next flight.  Advanced Bio Treatment technicians arrived quickly and worked with great diligence to thoroughly decontaminate the plane’s cabin so that business could resume.

Blood cleanup is a specialized matter because of the possibility of infection disease and bacterial growth, so professional help is always recommended when dealing with blood and other body fluids remaining from a birth, trauma scene, or car accident.  At Advanced Bio Treatment, we adhere to very rigid guidelines to prevent exposure to and transmission of viruses such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, the Zika virus, and HIV.  Not only are we certified to decontaminate after a trauma, but we also hold certifications to remove, transport, and dispose of biohazard material so that you aren’t left wondering what steps to take next.

It’s always the best idea to hire professionals well versed and well practiced in government and industry standards for your biohazard cleanup needs.  Advanced Bio Treatment is there when for your biohazard cleanup needs, and we’re honored to offer our compassionate, professional trained technicians to help you recover.  Call us 24-hours a day, 365 days a year at 1-800-295-1684.
