We Do More Than Just Blood Cleanup!
Some think all we do is scrub and disinfect bloody scenes, but this is not the case! Just recently we had a job to clean up a gastrointestinal bleed and MRSA (staff) infection. OK, so it was a little bit of a bloody mess, but we also disinfected the home for MRSA, which you don’t hear about often.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is caused by a strain of staph bacteria that’s become resistant to antibiotics commonly used to treat staph infections. We had to be super careful at this scene and make sure our entire bodies were protected in order to resist catching this.
Most likely, the elderly gentleman didn’t even know he had MRSA. These skin infections start off as a small, red bump that resembles a spider bite. The infections grow quickly and turn into swollen, painful abscesses, which doctors need to surgically drain. If the bacteria burrow deeper, they can cause infections throughout the body, including in the bloodstream, heart, bones, joints, lungs and surgical wounds, which can result in chest pain, fever and even death. This poor ol’ guy literally bled to death internally (which eventually led to external bleeding) while suffering major infections throughout his body from the unknown MRSA. His gastrointestinal bleeding came from his anus where he was suffering from hemorrhoids, hence the blood (blood on the chair if you are reading this from Facebook!).
This Gentleman Probably Never Associated His Symptoms As An Infection
This unusual scene involved the cleanup of blood seeping out of the gentleman and the disinfection of every square-inch in the entire home.
