We have all heard the stories about the “cat lady” or the spinsters living alone with a houseful of dogs.
Rarely do we hear about the clean up of a hoarding situation.
Sadly, there are numerous true cases of people who live in just such situations with animals galore throughout their home, dropping feces and urine wherever they feel like it. Such stories are true and create situations of horrible filth and odors that are extremely difficult to remove.
Some psychiatrists label this disorder “shared paranoid disorder,” a you and me against the world mentality.
One recent case in Saddle River, New Jersey, a series of events led to the discovery that a 12,000 sq. ft. home in a well to do neighborhood a severe case of animal cruelty and neglect was going on. Twenty three dead animals were found stored in the garage and over 100 live cats and dogs found roaming inside the house. A Michael Acciardi placed a $2.4 million bid on the house despite never having set foot in it.
The floors within the home had animal feces and waste in some places inches deep. The odor was so strong from urine and feces that when a neighbor came to the front door and the door was open the smell nearly sickened and knocked him over.
This story was particularly shocking to residents because it occurred in one of the area’s most upscale neighborhoods. At least 140 cats and 6 dogs were rescued by the time the incident had been reported and dealt with.
