I can’t tell you how many times I have been called out to a hotel or other business to deal with the clean up of some poor soul’s blood and brain matter, or other bodily fluids, after they have committed suicide in these impersonal locations. I really think that these individuals that have been driven to take their own lives in these public, yet private, places are doing so because they are attempting to spare their loved ones from having to see or clean up in the wake of their act.
Unfortunately, while they might be sparing their family members from having to handle the aftermath of these senseless decisions, at least as far as the physical cleanup goes, the truth of the matter is that these businesses belong to real people too, who have to take on the responsibility of remediation of their property so that they can get back to the business that is their livelihood.
Recently my office outside of Fredericksburg, Maryland was contacted by a fast food restaurant manager near Baltimore.
Apparently they had had a guest stand up from one of their dining tables, after he had eaten his last meal, and then he had walked to the back bathroom, where he had pulled a .38 special out from his waistband and then put the gun in his mouth. The sound of the gun going off alerted the workers, who called the police.
When they arrived, they entered the mens restroom to discover the body of a 35 year old male, lying on the floor of one of the stalls, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the inside of his mouth that exited through the back of his head, spraying his skull and brain matter across the narrow walls and tiled floor.
Our field technicians got their about 12 hours after the incident and began working right away. We know how important it is for our businesses to be back up and running as quickly as possible. Its not about being insensitive about the death of a fellow human, its about minimizing the impact to other innocent individuals who are relying on their paychecks to feed and shelter their own families.
First, ABT begins by removing all surface material, such as puddles of blood, splatterings of brain matter, and pieces of skull or hairy scalp.
Next, we thoroughly clean the walls, ceiling, appliance and floors, eliminating the remaining biohazardous material, before we begin our sanitation process, using only the best, hospital grade cleaners that meet EPA and OSHA guidelines. Every surface is wiped down and scrubbed, and then inspected with black lights to be sure that every bit of biological matter is gone.
Finally, we tackle the flooring, which in this case was relatively straight forward. Because of the volume of blood that results from a head wound, particularly a messy one like a gunshot wound, we had to pull up all the tile to get to the blood that had seaped beneath the grout. Once that area was totally remediated and decontaminated, we brought in workers to relay the tile, reinstall the stall’s walls and door, and completed the job with cleaning the toilet bowl, which had become clogged with a huge chunk of skull that had part of the man’s brown haired scalp still attached to it.
In the end, I could tell that the business owner was pleased, albeit a bit ruffled from the whole ordeal, and after a young female employee shook my hand, and thanked me for the job that I do, so that she could get back to making money for her and her daughter, it made it all worth it. Ill never look at a burger the same way again though.
Blood cleanup involves the removal and cleaning or disposal of items that have been contaminated with body fluids, blood, or tissue matter, but does not stop there. Those trained in blood cleaning are adept at tracking down and remediation areas that have been contaminated – areas that the untrained eye would not see.
When a firearm is used, there is often as much biohazardous material that you cannot see as there is that is visible. For the safety of a blood cleanup technician, and of future inhabitants, it is most important that this bio-hazardous material be decontaminated as well.
