After the call to 911, and after the police, EMTs, or coroner have gone, Advanced Bio Treatment is called to help put things back in order. Even when things will never, ever be the same again for those left behind, we do our best.
I have a job that most people would consider one of the worst on earth. It is a job, however that I take very seriously and though I am affected by what I see sometimes, just like anyone else would be. I take comfort knowing that I am providing a service which helps people move forward from an accident or tragedy.
Advanced Bio Treatment deals with a wide spectrum of cleanup calls… From murders, to suicide, to decomposing bodies which have gone unnoticed for a period of time. Really, just about any incident which involves bio-hazardous elements. Sometimes the calls we get don’t involve death at all, like wrecked vehicles at auto body shops, hoards, or the aftermath of a medical emergency.
We really have seen and dealt with it all with professionalism and courtesy. Before going out to a cleanup location, we typically like to have as much information as possible to prepare not only our equipment, but also our minds in regards to working with distraught family members.
However, sometimes we don’t get a whole lot of fore knowledge to go on. In one case that we had recently, this was a very bad thing indeed. As unbeknownst to us the victim in this instance had an infectious disease.
We arrived at the San Francisco home almost right away after the call came through, describing a horrible scene that had involved the near fatal stabbing of a woman we would later discover was carrying HIV.
Apparently the woman worked as a prostitute in the local area, and after a bad night… it had been raining buckets all week… her pimp had taken exception to the scarcity of work. One night he had gotten rip roaring drunk and took out his frustration by beating, then ultimately stabbing, his girl.
The victim had luckily been found out front in the yard, bleeding heavily from four deep puncture wounds, and was barely clinging to life. But she would make it. She was rushed into surgery, where surgeons were able to repair her injuries.
Back at the house, the man had been arrested for the assault, and the homeowner was contacted by police so they could arrange to have the home cleaned. That’s when we were called.
The job was very straightforward, or so it seemed. Blood was of course everywhere inside the home, up and down a clothes scattered hallway, dripping down baseboard, and smeared on handles and door jams.
We quickly removed all traces of the incident, cleaning and sanitizing the entire home, until special lighting revealed that there was no remaining biological material left behind.
It wasn’t until later that we were contacted by the homeowner who was calling us, concerned about his safety or the safety of future residents, because he had learned that the injured woman had been discovered to be HIV positive.
Fortunately, at ABT we follow the strictest guidelines when it comes to remediation. Despite not knowing about the infectious disease, our work procedures saved not only our technicians, but also guaranteed that this homeowner and his future renters will be safe. This is why it is so important to call professional bio hazard cleanup specialists like us.
ABT consists of trained experts who have the equipment and knowledge to handle any incident involving biohazardous material. Blood, urine, feces and other bodily fluids contain pathogens which can be dangerous. Combine that with strong chemical cleaning agents and these scenes can pose a significant health risk suited for experts like ABT who are certified by the EPA and OSHA.
We will handle everything from removing furniture to working with your insurance company. No family member or loved one should have to face cleaning up after an accident or tragedy… It can be daunting not to mention disturbing to the untrained mind. We will do our best to make it just a distant memory.
