In the United States, the leading cause of death for individuals between the ages of 1-34 is unintended injuries.

Ranging from kitchen accidents involving knives, to motor vehicles accidents, slip and falls, poisonings, drug overdoses, allergic reactions, and murder, to name a few.

At Advanced Bio Treatment, we are constantly getting calls to restore a home in the wake of one of these events, whether it’s related to accidents or violence. Some of them are particularly difficult, both emotionally and physically.

One such case we encountered took place in a home outside of San Jose, the call having come into our San Francisco headquarters. The client on the phone explained that she was contacting us because her young, 25 year old daughter and mother of one beautiful 3 year old boy, had fallen victim to domestic violence. She told us that the home was absolutely covered in more blood than she had ever seen, even during her time as a nurse at a local children’s hospital.

We knew it would be bad, but after we had arrived at the charming, middle class neighborhood home, I saw that it was far worse than I had anticipated.

Inside, blood was indeed everywhere. Apparently, according to the mother of the victim, her daughter had terrible choice in men, but no matter how much she was warned, she never listened to anyone.

The man that she had been with for the last four years, and who had fathered her son, was known to be a very possessive man, who had on more than one occasion, had overreacted to something totally harmless, like her smiling at the cashier in the grocery store, and then had proceeded to smack her around until a neighbor called the cops, but she had refused to admit to the police that he had struck her at all.

After the birth of their child, however, she began to see that she had to remove herself and her child from the situation. She made plans to leave, and had been saving up money for sometime to make her escape from the abuse. Everything had been arranged. She would wait until he left for work one morning, and then she would grab a few possessions, her son, and the car keys to their car. Then she would head to another state to be with her family until she got on her feet.

But it was not to be.

Having caught wind of the plans from a well meaning neighbor, he had rushed home to find her just about to walk out of the door. He flew into a rage, grabbing the nearest object to him which happened to be a screwdriver. Offering to help her take the things to the car, he waited until she had turned her back and then unleashed hell, stabbing her an unbelievable 76 times, seriously injuring his hand in the process….

The adrenaline pumping, she was able to grab her child and push him out of the front door with instructions to run down stairs to his babysitter to call 911.

Just as she began to stumble out of the door, the man recovered from his shock at having stabbed his own and and he grabbed her to drag her back inside the apartment. Managing to break loose, she ran as fast as she could to the back bedroom, where she locked the door and then barricaded it with a dresser, before trying deperately to open a window where she could jump to safely. Before she could open the window, her man burst through the door and unloaded his handgun into her body, killing her instantly, then he put the gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. The gun was empty, and as he went to reload, the police burst through the doorway, and after repeatedly ordering to drop the weapon, he raised the gun as if to fire, and was shot dead on the spot by law enforcement.

Even though the cleanup was routine blood removal, there was so much that it took nearly an entire week. Once we handed the keys back over to the mother, she explained that she would be putting the home up for sale, because she couldn’t bear to see the scene of her daughter’s death, even though we had completely removed all evidence of the terrible tragedy that had taken place within the walls of the house.

As we said goodbye, I had to ask her about the little boy who was now wiithout both parents. Smiling, she squeezed my hand and said that they were both helping each other heal, and that the little one would be living with her until she was no longer able to care for him. But, laughing, she said she was healthy as a horse, and she saw nothing but good things ahead for the little one which had see so much already in his short life.
