In order to do this job, it is important to understand what you will see as part of the profession. Crime scenes where there was violence will have broken items and may include damage to walls, doors, and glass. Any location where a person has died will have bodily fluids and various types of stains and smells.

People who are easily upset or have a queasy stomach are not suited to this job. There are even days when I come to work and are taken aback by what I see. You just can’t prepare yourself for everything… humans can be very inventive in how they decide to go or how they decide to help someone else go.

For instance, a recent suicide we were contacted about left me reeling. According to the report we were given, John Doe, a 51-year-old man, had decapitated himself in the early morning hours at or about 9:30 am. Witnesses said the man tied a rope around a pole across from his vehicle.

Then, using the other end of the rope, John Doe tied it around his neck, before re-entering his 2005 Honda CRV, and accelerating the vehicle a short distance up the quiet roadway. When the rope hit its limit, the victim’s head was ripped off with such force that a long portion of the man’s spine also came off still attached to the skull.

After beheading himself in the apparent suicide, the car continued on and crashed into a parked vehicle. The resultant collision caused the man’s headless body to be thrown about on the street, where a passerby called police.

In a situation like that one, there’s no easy way to prepare yourself for the gore you’re about to see. I mean, how many times does one see such morbid creativity in the way they choose to kill themselves? Every Time it seems like I’ve seen it all, some overachiever has to prove me wrong.

Cleanup on a vehicle after a suicide, which is one of the most popular places to commit the act, can be tricky, particularly ones that involves a lot of high velocity blood splatter and large volumes of blood or other bodily fluids, like those carried out with a firearm or some other highly traumatic incident, much like the one described above.

After the removal of larger pieces of skull, brain, or other bio waste, we have to entirely disassemble the car’s interior to get to hard to reach places. We use special lighting to illuminate blood or other bodily fluids, so that proper decontamination can occur.

Every surface in the vehicle is wiped down and thoroughly sanitized, using only the highest quality, hospital grade cleaners. Soft surfaces of the car, like the ceiling liner, seats or door inserts must be steam cleaned, or replaced altogether.

Once the car has been properly cleaned, it is inspected for any areas that might have been missed, but once we have the green light, the car is able to be returned to an owner or resold.

Its important to keep in mind that these sorts of cleanups are not for the inexperienced. Not only are we trained to handle dangerous materials, like harsh chemicals and bodily fluids that may contain a wide array of pathogens which can pose significant risk to human health… so you don’t want to mess with the stuff yourself, and we’re talking about a car, where the sun will definitely make any biomaterial left behind stink to high heaven. So its best to just leave the tough work to the professionals at ABT.
