Ooh Ooh That Smell

I had always heard there was a smell of death and wondered if it was true. I am here to tell you that it is very true. Once you experience the smell of decomposition there is nothing you can compare that experience to or even begin to put into words what it feels like.

My profession as a crime scene cleanup technician requires that I deal with death on a regular basis. I can’t emphasize enough that this is not a job for everyone. This takes a person with a very strong stamina, strong stomach, strong will and yet at the same time, empathetic and caring to families and loved ones of the deceased.

Human bodies are intricate and detailed, yet highly dependent upon the breath of life. Once the heart stops beating, life is gone, forever. No matter how strong physically a person is the body will decay and the process is quite unsettling. Even talking about this to people is so foreign to them they don’t believe how bad it is so sometimes I just don’t talk about it at all.

The Odor of Rotting Flesh is Very Distinct

The only comparison I can make that you may have experienced is if you have ever left fresh chicken in your trunk by accident in hot weather for a few days…………….yeah something like that.

Maybe you have set out rat or mice poison at one time and had one crawl under your refrigerator or between a wall and die, that smell is so foul it is very hard to remove even after the body is gone.

One would think the smell would never go away because it is so overwhelmingly stomach churning and foul. Somehow, our disinfecting and sanitizing process is capable of totally removing and restoring homes and businesses back to normal where a decomposition of a dead body has occurred.

Probably the worse case I have ever encountered was that of a pastor of a church who for some unknown reason died in the church and wasn’t found for over ten days. The decomposition began, maggots and flies infested the body as it usually happens.

The atrocity of this particular incident was that his body actually exploded. I can’t give a scientific explanation and get it exactly right as to why that occurred. From my perspective it appeared that his body gases had accumulated in his chest cavity around his heart and the pressure caused it to explode. And when I say explode I mean blood everywhere, fluids everywhere, flesh, well you get the idea.
