It all started with a painkiller.

J. Doe had suffered a knee injury and surgery didn’t seem to get rid of the pain. Doctors prescribed Oxycontin and countless other pain pills which did knock the pain but after awhile he was used to it and needed something stronger. At a party he was introduced to heroin which he instantly fell in love with.

Heroin wasn’t hard to come by and he got it for much less than what he had been paying for pills. He had a problem with drinking in his early twenties and  had been going to AA meetings.

The apartment had a few empty bottles of prescriptions for Subtex, also known as buprenorphine, a treatment for heroin addiction that is an alternative to methadone treatment.

Also known as Suboxone, buprenorphine works by blocking the “high” users feel when they do heroin or opioid based pain killers.

The indication was that he had attempted to overcome the Heroin addiction by using the Subtex which blocked the high of heroin which is supposed to help the addict stop.

Sadly, J. Doe must not have been able to stop the usage or just lost hope altogether, and ended up slitting his wrists in the bath tub. His family tried to understand but couldn’t make sense of what had happened.

Heroin addiction is growing at alarming rates and is readily available on the streets. The recent death of Philip Seymour Hoffman brought attention to the rising problem as people were stunned at the amounts of heroin bags found in his apartment.

Suicide is often a horrific and the scene should not be attempted to be cleaned by family members or anyone who hasn’t been trained. The emotional trauma of a suicide is devastating enough without adding to their emotional pain any further.

Imagine the painful unanswered questions this family has and will continue to have in the future.
