I was recently contacted by the mother of a young man who had unfortunately made the decision to end his young after he had endured a deeply profound bout of depression caused by the combination of being sexually assaulted in his school locker room by a coach and the very intense public humiliation, shame and bullying by some members of the community that had followed.
She had called to tearfully thank us for the work we had done to restore her home in the aftermath of her son’s suicide. The residence was located in a very upscale, charming neighborhood just outside of Fredericksburg, Maryland, near Baltimore, on a quiet street in a family focused community.
Thinking back, I recalled images of blood soaked carpet, and bloody walls… the young man had chosen to use his father’s antique revolver to do the deed. It had done it’s job thoroughly. We had to be just as thorough in our work.
Even though the boy had been discovered just moments after the fatal gunshot, the blood from a head wound is immense. We had to strip away the carpet, and remove blood all the way down to the sub flooring. After we had cleaned the flooring in its totality, including replacing the wood beneath the carpet padding and then the carpet itself, we had to start on the walls.
We used special lighting to track every drop of blood, from the largest glob to the tiniest pin drop, so that complete removal was carried out. Though not necessary in this case, many times we will strip the room to its bare bones to replace entire panels of dry wall. We are that serious in our determination to not only eliminate hazards, but to erase all signs of the horrible night.
Finally, we put up a fresh coat of paint and then replaced the furniture and art. By the time wee had finished, there was absolutely no evidence that anything like a suicide had taken place in the home, save for the many bouquets of flowers and sympathy cards that occupied nearly every bit of free space.
