National Suicide Prevention Month Ends October 7, National Day Without Stigma

The stigma, shame and silence that accompanies mental health problems and suicide contributes to a high rate of suicide among college students.

More than 1,100 college students die each year from suicide. Death by suicide has been reported as being the second leading cause of death among students in college. Part of the problem is the reluctance among college students to seek treatment because of the stigma and shame related to their problems.

In fact, it has been discovered that as many as 1 in 12 students have a suicide plan in place just in case something in their life goes wrong! The statistics are shocking in numbers and in reality. The reality is if a suicide plan is in place the intentions are to complete it.

If a student has a plan, they usually know how they would do it and when. This places them at a very high risk for death by suicide. Death by suicide poses emotional trauma as well as other issues such as cleanup of the suicide scene.

What might be signs to watch for in students? One sign is giving away possessions. They may make comments like “what would it be like to go to sleep and never wake up?”

Factors that contribute to high suicide risk could be drug and alcohol abuse, often mixed together. Isolation and loneliness, depression, new responsibilities from being on their own financially, all combined can contribute to a volatile situation.

A depressed, suicidal student who is reluctant to get treatment and withdrawn from friends may die from suicide. The aftermath of a suicide can be disturbing visually and emotionally.
