To you and I the inside of the hoarder’s home is a mess of clutter and confusion.

Random objects here and there, stacked to the ceiling, piles of paper, random objects of little apparent value.

While most of us have a sense of nostalgia and sentiment to keep memorabilia, the hoarder cannot seem to differentiate between memorabilia and garbage. Everything is of some importance and therefore worth keeping, just add it to the pile.

Hoarders have a recurring sense of a hatred of waste. A pair of shoes that are too small and out of style will have some purpose for someone someday, so the hoarder keeps them. The empty bottle the ketchup came in may be needed later so throw it in the pile too.

Hoarders love their stuff.

There are all kinds of theories why people hoard. Emotional attachments to stuff is easier to make than attachments to people for some. Its not just poor people who hoard. There have been reported cases of rich people who fill one house with junk and buy another one and do the same.

Hoarders are often resistant to treatment. For non hoarding people it is hard to understand why the hoarder has such a need to save a broken chair or every ticket stub from every train ride taken for twenty years but it happens nonetheless.

Hoarding is not classified as a mental disorder, rather a symptom of another disorder Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Hoarding can be the result of a brain trauma, injury, depressive disorders and other conditions that may contribute.

The home of a hoarder causes many problems. The potential for fires is a big issue. Having beds that cannot be slept in because there is too much junk on them, furniture that cannot be used because it is covered in “treasures.”

Sometimes hoarders collect animals and the animals leave waste all over the house making a horrible, unsanitary mess that will require odor removal and disinfecting the area during cleanup.
