Police Chase Ends in Tragedy

It was an icy Portland afternoon when a police chase ensued involving what police believed to be a stolen car and a convicted criminal on the run.  It didn’t take long, however, for the chase to end tragically when the vehicle in question smashed into the window front of a local restaurant.  The driver was ejected from the vehicle through the windshield and there were numerous injuries.

My husband and I were sitting in the back of the restaurant when we heard what sounded like a bomb going off.  Smoke and glass was everywhere and there were bodies laying motionless under overturned tables.  The scariest part was the disorientation of it all; I mean your brain just can’t make sense of all the screaming and the image of a smoking car protruding through the front of a diner.

The damage to the structure of the building was within the realm of recovery, but the carnage was unimaginable.  The driver of the vehicle, who was entangled in broken chairs and glass shards, died on the scene and was nearly decapitated from the injuries sustained in the crash.  And seven others sustained injuries ranging from a fractured skull, to a broken leg, to gashes on the face, head, and limbs, that required extensive stiches and stapling.

First responders contacted the owner of the diner and recommended Advanced Bio Treatment for the trauma scene cleanup in addition to the crime scene cleanup resulting from the investigation.  A team of our highly trained technicians quickly assessed the extensive needs and got to work recovering the facility from the tragic event.

Leave the Blood Cleanup to the Professionals

The amount of blood and biological material in need of removal was tremendous.  The building and kitchen were not too badly compromised, but the entire dining area was a bloodbath and a cesspool for disease, bacteria and blood borne pathogens.

The blood had seeped into the stained concrete flooring which had to be decontaminated, removed, and disposed of according to biohazard regulations.  Expedient blood cleanup is essential and can be a dangerous matter because of the possible spread of communicable disease, so seeking professional help is a necessity when dealing with blood and body fluids remaining from a trauma scene, car accident, homicide, or suicide.

Advanced Bio Treatment technicians adhere to very specific practices to avoid subjection to and transmission of viruses and bacteria such as HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, Ebola, and the quickly spreading Zika virus, involving the use of equipment that confirms the complete removal of biological material including blood, body fluids, and body tissue.

Once Advanced Bio Treatment completed the blood clean up and biohazard waste removal, the local diner underwent extensive remodeling in an effort to offer its community a new start after such a tragedy.  Gail, the owner of the diner, wrote to Advanced Bio Treatment to express her gratitude,

When I arrived the next morning straight from a red-eye flight to find your diligent team of Advanced Bio Treatment technicians working since the night before to recover my store, I almost cried in relief.  I didn’t expect to find that anyone was as determined as I was to get our community back on its feet again, but there they were at dawn in their biohazard suits removing bags and bags of waste from the diner.  Thank you for your commitment to Portland, Maine; it means much more that you may ever know.

We at Advanced Bio Treatment are always humbled by the words of gratefulness from the relationships we’ve built with business owners and families in Portland, Maine and all of its surrounding towns. We are committed to making sure that we are there in the future to help them recover from the unexpected tragedies that we all sometimes face.
