Unattended Death in Washington, D.C.

A frantic landlord called ABT last week asking if we could help him immediately. Apparently the apartment needed blood decomposition cleanup and contained a horrific smell in one of the bedrooms at his complex. A man’s body was discovered in one of his apartments who had been dead almost 15 days, according to the coroner report.

John D.’s body was found lying on the tile in his bedroom. The mattress had no sheets and was soaked with blood. The Washington, D.C. Realtor appeared to be in his late 50 or 60’s and from the looks of the place was a very heavy smoker.

The tile was the most gruesome sight I have ever encountered. The body was literally leaking fluids, blood, urine, feces and the stomach was completely bloated. There were dead flies belly up, dead bugs and maggots which were a mixture of alive and dead. Above the floor was a nightstand, a lamp with flecks of blood on the shade and the pillow had blood stains on it also.

The Tile Was So Badly Covered With Blood

I saw no choice but to ask two of the techs to pull up a large section of the tile. The blood had completely soaked in the grout besides being spattered all over the tile. There wasn’t any portion of the room that didn’t have some kind of bacteria on it.

ABT has its unique set of bio-hazardous chemical waste cleanup equipment and biohazardous waste removal chemicals which are strong enough to disinfect the spatters. The combination of strong chemicals and a strong armed and very patient tech who has to scrub and brush the tile until it is clean. Our team of professionals are not only empathetic they are efficient and as timely in removal and cleanup of these types of scenes.

I am very proud of the professionalism of my technicians. I can usually tell after a few jobs out in the field if they are going to last. Some people just aren’t cut out for this type of work no matter how hard they try. Thankfully, I have selected many technicians and trained them to be successful at this work.
