Perhaps one of the strangest jobs I ever completed for ABT involved the suicide of a high school football coach, one that had been extremely well loved in the community where he worked and lived.

But the unusual part was where and why he chose to do what he did. I think its only fair to give a clear warning that the following material is definitely not safe for work and viewer discretion is advised. Its going to get real, people.

Shortly before Christmas last year, I got the call from the local superintendent of schools, for a district not too far from Birmingham, Alabama, who requested our accident scene cleanup services immediately. He told me over the phone that there had been a serious incident where someone had been killed in one of the men’s locker rooms, or more specifically a restroom inside of it,

Once we got to the school, we were met by the principal and a police detective who led us down to the locker room which had been roped off with yellow crime scene tape.

The bathroom was smaller than I expected, or perhaps it just seemed that way because of the enormous pool of blood which dominated the center of the room, spreading out like a crimson fan from the first stall. Opening the door to that stall was like unwrapping a gruesome present… brain matter and skull clung to the plastic walls and dripped down the porcelain toilet, collecting scraps of human flesh in the water of the bowl.

Turning to the detective, he must have read the question on my face as he began to give an account of what I was looking at.

Apparently, the much beloved football coach had been living a double life. When he wasn’t teaching technique or strategy to his players, he was allegedly showing a few of the cheerleaders a couple of secret moves. When one of the girls’ mothers discovered a lewd text message, which included a picture of the coach’s fully erect penis, from the educator to her daughter, the poop hit the fan!(and we probably cleaned that up too)

The mother called the school to report what she had found, and the school contacted local law enforcement, who went to the school after hours to arrest the coach at his football practice on charges of sexual misconduct with a minor.

When the coach saw police and the mother of the girl he had been involved with, coming down the stairs in the football stadium, he must’ve known that the gig was up. He rushed into his office where he concealed a .38 special in his waistband, and then quickly made his way to the restroom where he locked himself in the stall.

The detective told me that it was just as they were rounding the corner to the locker room when they heard the unmistakable sound of a firearm discharging. When they searched the area, they found the coach, slumped against the toilet, dead from a single gunshot wound to his head.

The cleanup of the school’s locker room was fairly easy to do since it had taken place in a relatively confined space. After we removed all of the blood, brain matter and bone fragments which had been left behind in the aftermath, we thoroughly checked and rechecked to make sure that we had not missed anything before we began our sanitation process, designed to protect the health of any inhabitant of a structure which has seen a large amount of bio-hazardous waste.

Soon, there was nothing left behind to give any indication of the inglorious end to the coach’s life except a discolored square on the wall where his picture had once hung. As we were packing up our gear, I looked around at the teenagers that watched us with interest and I knew that my cleanup job had been the easy one this time. I didn’t envy the parents of the children affected by this traumatic event or the school district for the “cleanup” that they undoubtedly had yet to fully complete on the minds and hearts of the local community. Restoring the faith of students and parents alike would probably take months if not years.
