There are some calls that we get that are unforgettable. The reasons can be as varied as the cases, but regardless of the details, the images seemed to be burned into my mind for all eternity, replaying at some of the most unconvienent times.
Whenever I get asked, as I often do, to name the most memorable clean up I have ever done, one of the first that immediately pops into my head involved a elderly woman who lived alone.
The home we were sent out to was located in a well established neighborhood, with older styled homes and enormous oak trees which lined the street in even rows. The community was mostly elderly couples, and the absence of young children playing amongst the carefully manicured hedges and lawns struck me as odd.
Our client, a middle aged woman who had identified herself as the daughter of the homeowner, met us at the front door to the charming little home, with a ceramic goose dressed in a yellow raincoat welcoming guests on the front porch.
After our brief introductions when I explained to her our blood removal process, she led us down a dark hallway, passing rows of framed pictures which hung on the walls as we went. When we reached the doorway to a master bedroom she paused and turned to give her own explaination to the scene we were about to see.
Her mother had been living on her own for sometime since her husband had passed away more than a decade earlier and during that time she had struggled with her own health issues but had been very stubborn on the issue of maintaining her independence.
Now, none of us were doctors, so I am unsure what underlying problem would cause the issue she began to describe. Her mother had been straining while on the toilet when something gave and she ended up with a prolapsed rectum.
This caused a massive gastrointestinal bleed out, and as she stood up from the toilet, gravity acted on her bowels. Blood and feces gushed out of her on to the honeycomb tile of the bathroom floor. After a few moments went by, the older victim attempted to stumble out of the bath to find a phone to call for help.
Bloody stool drippings and bloody footprints gave a clear indication that she, even in her weakened state, knew that her life depended on whether she was able to alert emergency services.
The cleanup was unreal. The bathroom looked like something out of a horror movie. A massive pool of bloody stool had collected in and around the tile next to the toilet. It would take days to thoroughly and completely restore this home to the condition it had been in prior to this horrific accident.
Slowly, and methodically, we made progress until we were finally able to go over the home with a fine toothed comb and be satisfied that we had not missed anything.
The day we handed the keys back over to the woman’s daughter, her smile reached ear to ear. We learned that not only was she pleased with the remarkable turn around of the home, but she was also happy to inform us that her mother would be moving in to live with her as soon as she had fully recovered from her ordeal. The doctors and surgeons had repaired and restored her body, much like we had restore her home.
