The song says that love hurts. But in this profession, I know that love can be more than hurtful… it can be fatal.

When it comes to love and hate, the line seems to be very blurred between the two. I have seen it all in terms of our War of the Roses cases, as I deem them, but they never fail to fascinate and horrify me. I mean, how does one go from professing undying love to facilitating the demise of that same individual.

A recent call we took near Atlanta, Georgia can testify to the brutality of a scorned lover.

The work order had us driving through affluent, middle class neighborhoods in the suburbs just outside of Rosewell, Georgia. Beautiful brick homes, with winding driveways and manicured lawns, stood sentinel as we pulled up to the house that hide a horror inside.

A middle aged man in a suit met us next to the large, three car garage, and quickly introduced himself as a representative for the family’s homeowners insurance. Taking us inside the home, he led the way down a darkened hallway to the master bedroom at the back. They always say this is the room where all the magic happens, but in my experience, this is the room where all the trauma happens.

In the center of the well appointed room was a large four poster bed, dressed in dark maroon silk linens which initially hid a gruesome surprise. Apparently, a young woman had been discovered by her husband having sexual relations with a co worker in the couple’s bed but before the wife had even had an opportunity to pull her panties back on, the husband in a crazed, emotional state, had gone to his closet to retrieve his souvenir Louisville Slugger.

Then, he marched back into the room and began bludgeoning both his wife and the other man. The coworker had managed to run from the room, but the woman was not so lucky. Her husband didn’t stop swinging the bat until her skull had been crushed like a soda can.

After that, he took out a small caliber pistol from the nightstand and leaned across his wife before putting the barrel in his mouth and blowing the back of his head off.

Blood was everywhere it seemed, particularly in the bedding and mattress. We had to carefully wrap the entire thing in layers of plastic so that it could be removed to a proper waste facility without spreading any possible pathogens along the way. Then we had to thoroughly remove blood and brain matter from the walls, ceiling and flooring, methodically going over ever inch until we were sure that nothing remained behind. Finally the area was sanitized to protect the future residents of the home.

Its sad to think that these people must have at one time thought that they were marrying their soulmate, someone who would love them until the day they died… not be the catalyst for that day. So yes, love hurts, but it can also be deadly.
