In this profession, you must develop a thick skin very quickly, or you will never last a week.

We had just taken on a new trainee when a call for homicide and crime scene remediation came into our Washington, D.C. office. The caller, as so often happens, was a family attorney representing the homeowner who had been put in touch with ABT through the First responders at the scene.

Whenever it comes to new employees, I immediately felt relief that the trainee’s first job be one where he would have to witness overwhelmed, grief stricken family members. We drove out to the address listed by the attorney, who was going to meet us in the home’s attached garage.

The neighborhood was very charming, mostly middle class by the looks of the manicured lawns and newer model cars, and rolling hills. Experience always tells me, however, that these seemingly perfect communities can often hide the darkest secrets. The home itself was unassuming. As we geared up, the attorney appeared by the wedge of the residence and cautiously moved towards me.

After formal introductions, we followed him up a small flight of steps to a tiny sitting room that reminded me of the type you might find in an old Victorian home.

Furniture had been shifted around unnaturally, either during the attack or afterwards as an after thought by the emergency responders who had attended the scene. Either way, it gave the room a disheveled look, punctuated with an enormous blood pool slightly towards the rear of the room.

The attorney cleared his throat, and handed me a piece of paper on which a police report had been typed. In cold black and white, it described the horror that had taken place inside the home. Random crimes are often the hardest to compute. How does one person pass through a community and leave grief in their wake? Some people are less than human In their behavior.

This case had involved a young couple who had been the victims of a botched home robbery. The report detailed a neighbor hearing a series of screams and gunshots coming from the residence and after police had arrived on scene to investigate, the discovery of the bodies of the homeowners, who were found in the space we now occupied.

Dead from execution style shootings to the backs of their heads. Evidently, they had also been bound with duct tape and beaten with a heavy object. One the killer got what he was looking for, some jewelry and cash out of a small safe, he or she went one step further and got rid of the witnesses.

The job mostly involved cleaning up the large amounts of blood that had been left behind after the double murders. We had to pull the flooring up to completely sanitized the home, which then meant we had to replace the flooring once we had finished cleaning it.

Every surface in the home had been dusted for prints, so we also had to be sure to erase all traces of the crime lab that had been set up inside the premises also. Finally, we handed the keys over and the attorney bid us farewell. Lucky, the trainee made it through with flying colors. Sometimes we get winners.
