Why Do People Kill? 5 Years On the Job and Still Do Not Understand a Homicide

Sometimes we get called to visit neighborhoods that are as scarred as the the forgotten people that inhabit them. These places have their own codes and practices that they live by, their own rules that even the lawless obey. Contrary to popular belief, there is some honor in thieves.

Take this one case I had last summer, for example… I had just arrived in D.C. when I received the call. There had been a homicide committed in an area known for its frequency of violence… if I remember correctly, it was listed in a recent Time Magazine article as being in the top 5 most dangerous places in America to live. The hopelessness and abject poverty was oddly counterbalanced by a richness of spirit and fortitude; everywhere the air seemed thick with tension, as though we walked precariously close to an unpredictable predator hidden in the bush.

It was a small row house, with more dirt than grass for a yard, and an old school domestic automobile sat just across it. The shiny chrome wheels looked out of place amongst the dust and carelessly discarded roadside trash.

Once inside it was clear that something major had taken place. Tables were toppled over and fist sized holes were punched into the dry wall. Quickly I noted the bullet holes that led down the hallway, and following them stumbled on a bloodbath just inside the bathroom. The bloke had taken some beating, my guess was with the butt of a pistol, and then had tried to lock himself in the bathroom.

But whoever the killer be, he was nothing if not determined. He punched in the door and unloaded his weapon, ending the victim’s life right there in the doorway. There was a lot of blood, as you can imagine, and we really had our work cut out for us.

I can never stress it enough the importance of hiring trained bio-decontamination specialists like us at ABT. Human blood, urine, feces and other bodily fluids should be handled and cleaned by professionals only. We are EPA and OSHA certified and we will restore your property to its previous condition.

When it comes to John Doe, apparently his motto was ‘Live fast, die young’… he made no secret of his love for money, drugs and women. This time, however, he chose the wrong girl. In fact, the police told me that she was only 13 years old. He had lured her into his house, drugged her and after assaulting her, threw her out on the curb like so much trash.

Some People and Places are Just Sick

But this is when that code of conduct that even these neighborhoods adhere to comes in. The killer, who no one saw or knows anything about(more code), apparently paid a visit to John Doe to teach him a lesson, and hand down some street justice.

One things for sure… it was a bloody mess. At the end of the day, we took care of business and restored the client’s property, though it certainly took some know how. Last I heard, the police had no suspects and no leads.
