In the scope of the crime scene cleanup business we come across situations that could be the result of organized crime activity.
Organized crime exists in all societies across the world to the extent that international security is at risk as well as local economies.
Those who are involved in organized crime do not work alone and their work is not without purpose. Some groups specialize in a specific area such as illegal drugs or prostitution.
Common structure of an organized crime group is hierarchy, similar to corporations which have a CEO, and levels of authority underneath. Groups such as the Columbian Cartel operate under a similar hierarchy under which tight control is maintained.
In 1993, Pablo Escobar, founder of the Medellin cartel, was shot to death by police at his hideout in Medellin, Columbia. At the time of his brutal death, he was said to worth an estimated $2 billion he earned primarily through trafficking cocaine. Escobar was one of many aggressive criminals who masterminded large empires and lived extravagant lifestyles as a result.
Even the activities of organized crime are not unlike legitimate corporations which are involved in import and export, retail, wholesale. The primary difference is the organized crime groups operate outside of legal boundaries, trade in illegal items such as weapons and drugs.
Violence is used as a means to control and achieve goals.
In addition to violence, bribery is used to escape prosecution and accomplish goals. Organized crime is also involved in sophisticated financial schemes, embezzlement, fraud, money laundering etc.
Crime scene cleanup is brutal at times. Imagine the scene of the death of Carmine “The Cigar” Galante, who rose to power quickly and became greedy, so much so that he attempted to take over the drug trade and hoard profits for himself. He and two other members of the Bonanno Crime family were gunned down while eating at a restaurant in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
In another case in organized crime history, Albert Anastasia, head of “Murder, Inc.”, who was known for making witnesses disappear, was gunned down while reclining in a barbershop chair, waiting for a haircut.
These true stories are a hint of the type of crime scenes that are the result of organized crime. Morbid scenes require in depth clean up, including murder, homicide, or fingerprint clean up, not a job for the weak.
Most never have to deal with this type of crime, however, the reality is that exists and is a continuing problem in our society.
