We remove all traces of the urine, feces and odor problem and can even deal with the airborne infectious material that may be present as a result of birds, pets, other pests or rodents and contagious disease.

Many calls that we receive have nothing to do with death but rather the restoration of property that has been allowed to go to the dogs… literally. We get a fair amount of calls concerning the problems faced by landlords who rent out their properties to tenants that are irresponsible in their pet ownership.

Once recent call that stands out in my mind involved just that. The home was in a very charming, older neighborhood with large brick houses and well established oak trees that lined the cobblestone street in neat, evenly spaced rows, just outside of San Francisco, California.

When we arrived at the brick house listed by the caller, it wasn’t obvious right away that there was anything amiss about the residence. The front yard was well maintained with a closely cropped lawn, meticulously manicured hedges and bright, fragrant blooms arranged around the front porch in pots of various sizes and colors. As we double checked the address listed on the work order, the bright red front door opened and a young attractive woman stepped out from the entry way and waved us over.

After brief introductions, partially to make sure we were in the right place, she led us into the empty property. Once inside, there was no mistaking that we were at the correct location… the musty smell of wet dog, combined with urine and feces, was overpowering to say the least.

As we walked from the foyer, down a long hall that had at one time had been beautifully waynescotted, we passed piles of animal droppings, some nearly petrified, which covered the large patches of flooring throughout the residence.

When we rounded the corner of a back doorway which led into a family room of sorts, we were nearly struck dumb by the intense ammonia of an untold quantity of cat urine, that had appeared to have saturated the carpet and sub flooring, from an unknown number of felines.

The walls of the room, as well as those in many other areas of the property, were stained with God knows what, and the smelly, dirty smudges rose nearly a third of the way to the ceiling. At various intervals around the home, large holes had been dug or chewed away from the drywall, random doors, and large expanses of flooring. It was unreal.

It was one of the worst cases of animal damage I have ever worked on… aside of course from the pets who are forced to eat their human after they pass unnoticed for some time. But that’s another story.

Even when a scene does not involve blood or decomposition of a body, other body functions like urine, feces or semen, as well as any cleanup including drug paraphernalia, should be attended by professionals with the knowledge, expertise and equipment like those at ABT only for the safety of all individuals involved.

These cleanups are inherently dangerous due to the health risks posed by the various bio-hazardous material. Do not attempt to remediate a scene yourself! ABT will walk you through the process and work with your insurance company to find the right cleanup procedure for you and your property. We are EPA and OSHA certified and guarantee to exceed not only your insurance company’s standards but yours as well. Bio-hazardous cleanups can be very overwhelming for many people, but you are not alone and we are here to do the dirty work for you. We don’t just restore properties… We restore your life.

Many questions came to my mind as we worked this case. Who were these people who had allowed their dogs to destroy their home so completely? As so often happens in this job, particularly when we work pet damage or hoarding cases, I am totally blown away by the living conditions some people accept as normal. Unsanitary environment, contaminated with feces, urine, decomposing waste and more, are breeding ground for all sorts of nasty things that can affect the health if not only the residents of the house, but future residents as well and even neighbors!

We got started by first going through the home with shovels and trash cans to begin removing all of the feces and waste that had been left behind. Then, we progressed by pulling up all of the flooring in the home, all the way down to the foundation in a few spots, so that we could thoroughly clean and sanitize the underlying materials.

The top layer if flooring, carpet in this case, was correctly removed and disposed of to ensure the safety of everyone involved, including the rest of the neighborhood and the waste removal guys.

Next, we removed large areas of drywall and even the insulation behind it, because the sheet rock was too far gone to save. After we took away all the old, saturated material, another contractor reinstalled fresh drywall and replaced the insulation, before bringing in new flooring.

Finally, after every surface in the home at been cleaned, decontaminated, or repaired, we brought in the big guns, our Ozone Machine, to remove any lingering odors or particulates in the air on a molecular level. All in all, it took us for days to repair and restore the home… and the young landlord’s sanity. Hopefully, the people that left her beautiful home in that condition will get their just desserts sooner than later. Until then, give your dog a hug… and potty break outside!
