Older people, in particular the frail elderly, are one of the groups of our population most vulnerable to accidents, particularly in and around the home. Those over 65 years of age are most often at risk, suffering both the highest mortality rate and the most severe injuries. In fact, it’s estimated 500,000 people aged over 65 years of age attend accident and emergency departments as the result of a home accident every year. Many of these accidents involve the bathroom or kitchen and falls account for a significant number of the personal injury calls I receive at ABT.
Recently, we were contacted at our San Francisco office by a family who has just discovered that their elderly mother had been involved in a serious accident inside her home.
Apparently, she had been standing at the sink peeling potatoes for the big Sunday meal that was a traditional part of this family’s life, when she had somehow fallen from a step stool, and had sliced open both her hand and forehead with the knife like steel tool.
We drove to an older neighborhood in a charming suburb outside of San Jose, California, to meet with the family at the residence. Though the mother was severely injured, she was one of the lucky ones, and would soon be returning to her home, which needed to be properly disinfected and cleaned up first.
When we arrived, we were greeted by two of her adult children, who made quick introductions before leading us into the house and through to the bloody scene… The kitchen. It was clear that one of the men, her son, was having a difficult time looking at the blood , which did start in the kitchen, with big bright drops of blood that splattered on the floor, but then it led down the hall to the bathroom where it was apparent that the older woman had been assessing the damage.
Noticing his discomfort, as here at ABT we are not only trained to handle biological waste and crime scene remediation, we are also trained to be compassionate to the family members going through one of the more difficult parts of life. I told him and his brother that his mother’s house was in good hands and that they should go and let us begin. He gratefully accepted.
Once they were gone, we got right to work. The cleanup was relatively straight forward, the only caveat being that a fair number of smaller items had to be thoroughly cleaned of bloody finger prints and blood splatter that it became a very meticulous undertaking.
Luckily though, the blood was not in so great a quantity that had soaked through to the sub flooring, so that saved us a good amount of time.
Slowly but surely, we were removing all signs of gnarly incident, and in just two days, just in time, we handed the keys back to the gentlemen as they were on their way to bring their mother home from the hospital, bandaged up but alive.
It was a job I was very proud of, because it takes a labor of love to really do this job right. It feels good that I could help this family concentrate on more important matters, like appreciating the time they still had together.
