Desperation and the Suicidal Myths and Facts

More than 36,000 people take their own lives each year. Approximately 5 million people attempt suicide and one of them succeeds about every 17 minutes,

I hate my life. “ …You will be better off without me.”…I won’t be a problem much longer.”

If you are hearing statements such as these you may be dealing with a potential suicide. An estimated 80 percent of successful suicides gave clear warnings about their intentions before actually carrying it out. There are indeed warning signs and ways to deal with them. There are also myths associated with suicide.

Here are a few myths and facts about suicide you may not know:

Myth – The suicide rate climbs during the holiday season.
Fact – Even though it would seem to be true due to the thoughts that many are alone depressed and vulnerable during the holidays the actual highest rate of suicide occurs during the spring. Professionals speculate this could be due to a change in light and an increase in energy.

Myth– Suicide rates are higher in big cities in low economic districts.
Fact -More suicides occur in homes with higher altitudes. The rate of suicide is about 70% higher in elevations of 2,000 meters than lower sea levels.

Myth – Teenagers are the highest group at risk.
Fact – The elderly are the highest at risk group, particularly white men over the age of 85. Illness and isolation influence these statistics. It is true that teenagers are at risk as well although the higher risk group is currently in the elderly.

Myth – Race is not a factor to be considered in the suicide rate.
Fact – Suicide is actually more common among white people than Hispanic, Black, or Asians.

Myth– Depression is the most common factor of suicide.
Fact – Alcoholism is a factor 1 in 3 completed suicides. Although depression is a true risk factor, we must not ignore the role that alcoholism plays.

Myth – Poor countries have a higher risk of suicide.
Fact – Rich, higher developed countries have a higher suicide rate than poor countries.

Myth – Suicides are more common on the weekend.
Fact – Most suicides actually happen on Mondays, followed by Tuesday and Wednesday.

Myth – Women are more apt to commit suicide because they are emotional.
Fact – More men commit suicide than women. Guns are most successful in completing a suicide, men own and use guns more than women. Facts indicate that women are more likely to choose a less violent ending to their lives in the form of overdosing on pills or poisoning themselves, these methods often are unsuccessful.
