Every year at Advanced Bio Treatment we get countless calls to restore a home in the aftermath of a unattended death.

Many times these cases involve the death of an elderly person who has taken a spill, and because a large portion of the older community lives alone, a simple fall that would otherwise have been minor becomes fatal.

One such case we received came into our Tennessee office earlier this year. The caller identified himself as the son of a man who had recently passed away at the family home and we were needed to clean up all evidence in order to put the home up for sale.

It was a beautiful, little home in an older area, as you might imagine, just outside of a small town in rural TN. It was spring, and the trees were experiencing a rebirth after the barren winter months… we passed long stretches of bright green forest and the occasional burst of color from the wildflowers which grew alongside the road.

We pulled down a long dirt driveway and were met by our client as we stepped out of our vehicle. After a brief introduction, we were led inside to a small master bedroom where we got a look at the scene for the first time.

The bed in the center of the space was not large, but took up most of the room. Beside the bed a sheet lay on the floor, surrounded by a large pool of semi-dried blood. The crimson stuff had seeped into the beautiful wood floors which I could tell were original to the old home, and I felt a momentary sense of sadness that they may be lost along with the life that had ended so suddenly.

As we began our remediation process, methodically removing all traces of blood and bodily fluid, I listened to the son give a brief explanation to my co-worker.

Apparently, his father had been suffering from declining health over the last few years, not the least of which was heart problems. On the morning of his death, he appeared to have been struck low by a heart attack, and as he tried to get out of bed to reach the phone to call for help, he became tangled in the sheets, and fell to the floor, banging his head against the corner of the door. The blow knocked him out, and he quickly succumbed to death. He was found later that afternoon, wrapped in bloody sheets.
