Unattended Death Cleanup
Mobile Alabama is home to the first Mardi Gras and grand, century-old oak trees and exemplifies the Old South and its deep history with charm. Ernest and his wife of almost 70 years, Fayla, had grown up together in Mobile, married when they were nineteen-years-old, and had four children and a beautiful life together. Ernest wouldn’t have dreamed of leaving Fayla’s side, not even for a night, and spent his days caring for her in their Victorian home near the bay. Ernest’s oldest son, James, suspected that his father was suffering from dementia and was beginning to see signs like confusion with the names of his own children and disorientation when navigating anywhere other than his own home. It wasn’t until the morning after a violent storm had hit their town, flooding streets and leaving many without electricity, that James discovered just how far advanced his father’s dementia had progressed. Worried about his parents, James rushed to his childhood home early the next morning to find the home miraculously untouched by the storm.
There wasn’t a single branch in the yard, and the front porch light was on which was unlike any other home I’d seen since just about everyone lost electricity over the night. Every other yard was littered with trash and rubble and trees were down everywhere. It was almost like a bubble had protected this one house.
But a different tragedy unfolded as James entered the home. There was a terrible stench as he called out for his parents. James found his father sitting at the kitchen table sipping tea with his mother’s teacup across the table from him. When James asked where his mother was, Ernest explained that she was still in bed because she hadn’t gotten over her cold just yet. James last visited just over three weeks ago before a business trip and remembered his mother complaining of congestion.
The stench was so offensive that James had to cover his mouth and nose when entering the bedroom. As he dreadfully suspected, Fayla had passed away, but Ernest hadn’t recognized it and had gone along each day caring for her as she lay in bed deceased. James called the rest of his siblings, and together they that decided that their father Ernest would move in with James and his family for the care he needed and their childhood home would be sold. James reached out for help in decontaminating the home; there were severe odor issues that seemed to seep from the walls in addition to dried, caked bodily fluids.
After Fayla’s remains were removed from the home, a team of our technicians at Advanced Bio Treatment arrived to help the family physically recover the home in preparation to sell it. Due to the length of time that had passed from the time of death and the discovery of the body, the decay of Fayla’s remains was advanced and had left the mattress saturated in body fluid. After the mattress, bedding, and an area rug had been removed by the biohazard-trained team, the porous flooring and drywall was treated for odor. Very often odors of decay, such as those related to an unattended death scene, can permeate porous materials, making it seemingly impossible to completely eliminate the odors. Our Advanced Bio Treatment team used specialized equipment and chemicals to correct these issues, completely eliminating offensive odors.
