About my third week working for ABT I found myself doubting if this was the job for me.
Don’t get me wrong, I have had plenty of experience working in emergency situations as an EMT so the site of blood isn’t enough to get to me.
I’ve seen plenty of stabbings, car accidents and driven at high rates of speed in inclimate weather to the Emergency Room. All in the call of duty, saving lives and serving my community.
Even that didn’t prepare me for how I would feel after this last crime scene cleanup. I simply just can’t comprehend the cruelty or the mindset behind yet another senseless act.
The family that lived here had apparently stayed in for the day watching movies together. I say this because the television was still on in the family room where the father, mother and son were found.
Only one survivor remains, a five year old little girl who said she had gone outside in the fenced in back yard to take her new puppy out for a potty break.
She didn’t see anything but she did say she heard a couple of men’s voices and a car speeding away. She was in a state of complete shock and we were amazed she was able to relay that much information to the officers who were on the scene when we arrived.
Who was responsible for this triple homicide? Did they know the little girl was outside? What could have been their motive?
Apparently, there was no robbery. While the family room was completely covered in blood which by now permeated the hardwood floors the rest of the home appeared normal.
The questions kept coming into my mind and I kept coming back to why, why, why.
Part of our responsibility as crime scene cleanup techs is to be very sensitive to family members in situations such as this. We were able to locate information to contact her grandmother who came to pick her. That too, was a heart wrenching moment I will never forget.
I think everyone of us had tears falling but tried not to show it.
Never, in my life have I known of a multiple murder where one child was left behind. How will she cope? Where would she even begin to pick up the pieces and have any return to normalcy in her young life?
All of the explanations in the world just don’t seem good enough to make sense out of this either to myself or the family.
Advanced Bio Treatment comes prepared to clean, decontaminate, disinfect, deodorize, and return the home to its original state of cleanliness. In this situation we will spend a great deal of time on the floor and the furniture which is heavily soaked in blood.
What will happen to the home after we clean it? We don’t have answers to all of those questions. This situation will require a lot of investigating as well as all the legal ramifications to follow regarding the little girl.
ABT is a caring and compassionate group of hard working folks. We see a lot. We hurt for this little girl and her tremendous loss.
